In Memory of Patty Molnar
Patty has been a valued turtle patrol volunteer since 2013 and spent thousands of hours protecting our sea turtles here on Edisto Beach, South Carolina. Over the years there have been several seasons where Patty did not miss a single day walking the beach from May 1st through August 31st. She has passed on her amazing knowledge of reading turtle tracks, finding egg chambers, and protecting hatchlings as they make their way to the ocean to so many volunteers. That knowledge will continue to protect sea turtles for years to come. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
Last year, I wanted to volunteer again after needing to sit out 2023 season due to a family crisis. Patty welcomed me not only to their team, but she amazed me with her commitment. She displayed her passion and pushed herself physically to do all she could for our sea turtles!

Two of my sisters and I had the pleasure of visiting Patty, one of our sisters in law, for a few days one summer (our brother, Michael, happened to be out of town at the time, though). We had a great time together, and were able to accompany Patty on walks on the beach, checking out turtle nests, and on one evening after dark, actually helping direct the newly hatched turtles from their nest as they emerged from their sand shelter, down the newly constructed wood & plastic sheeting pathway toward the ocean. Some of the little hatchlings even would wander outside of the path and crawl on our bare feet - what an experience! Patty and the other turtle group members instructed us in what to do and what not to do along the way. We could see how they had become so enamoured with the process of helping the turtle population to stay safe & grow - it was fun! During the trip, we did lots of simple, but fun activities. Patty was known to not be a huge fan of the many golf carts that people sometimes carelessly operated around the island, however, some of us had a desire to try one out to travel more easily and quickly from place to place for just a few hours. When out on a shopping trip, we happened to be close to a rental place for the carts, and checked into pricing. We then called Patty before making a decision to rent, and she (with a little hesitation) agreed to ride with us for a partial day rental. So, we rented, went to the house to pick her up, and had a great time, with her smiling and laughing with us (and making sure we obeyed all her rules)! We hoped to go back to visit again with our other sister in law joining in, but unfortunately, never got around to planning it. Spending this time with Patty meant so much to us, and is a treasured memory. Rest in God's peace, dear Patty. Hope to see you again in our eternal home one day. Peggy

I met Patty about a year ago and she took me under her wings. With all of my concerns becoming part of the EBLTP, she would always give me four simple words of wisdom..."It will be fine". Over the short period of time that I knew Patty it was always fine!

Patty was the ROCKSTAR of EBLTP!! If you every needed her, no matter how busy she was or how many hours she had been on the beach working turtle, she was always willing to come with all her turtle knowledge and help you. She will be missed terribly.

I met Patty in 2019 when I joined the Turtle Patrol. Not only was she a great teacher concerning turtles but she also became a great friend. I will never forget her out pacing the whole team to get to that new nest first. I will never forget watching her walk up to a new nest, get that serious look on her face, put that magic probe of hers to work and find the egg chamber in just a couple of probes. Many times she would get it on the first try which was so much fun to watch. I will never forget how eager she was to step in and find the egg chamber when I had made "swiss cheese" of a nest as I was learning how to probe. Patty loved to probe! I will never forget spending evenings on the beach with Patty going from nest to nest hoping to see the ultimate boil. I will never forget learning what driveway drinking was really all about...meeting so many wonderful people here on Edisto, all thanks to Patty. But most of all I will never forget you Patty. I will miss you dearly Patty Prober! Rest in peace dear friend.

Back in 2017 when Linda and I retired to the beach Patty and Susan took us under their wings. Patty trained us both. She had a special intuition for locating challenging egg cavities. So many times through the years we’d call upon her to find those precious hidden eggs. She was a true Turtle Patrol Standard Bearer! She will be missed. 🫶🏼

Patty has been a friend and mentor to me for ten years! She had a passion for EBLTP and put her whole heart and soul into the program. It was a joy to learn under her and Susan and watch her teach her vast knowledge of sea turtles to many volunteers over the years! She loved probing for eggs and was an absolute pro and could easily locate even the hardest egg chambers to find! My children loved to learn from her and ask her a million questions as well, which she happily answered! She will be dearly missed on Edisto Beach! EBLTP will not be the same without her!
